The tea is grown at an altitude of around 700 metres in the Wuyishan mountain region of Fujian Province, one of China’s most renowned areas for oolong tea. This is the home of the so-called Wuyi rock teas, *yancha*, a tradition closely associated with the region’s dramatic mountain landscape and long history of tea production.

Huang Mei Gui is the cultivar used for this tea. The name means “yellow rose” and suits the cultivar’s distinctly aromatic and floral character. It is a relatively modern Wuyi cultivar and has become appreciated in particular for its pronounced fragrance and elegant floral notes.

The tea is hand-picked and produced using traditional methods. After processing, it is roasted in baskets over charcoal, which gives the tea an aromatic roasted note while also making it suitable for ageing over several years.

Wuyi has a very long tradition of tea cultivation and is especially famous for its oolong teas. The region has also played an important role in the development of both oolong tea and the black teas that later became known far beyond China.
